Nothing’s New Release: Phone (2a) Plus and AI News Reporter Widget

 

Nothing has unveiled its latest smartphone, the Phone (2a) Plus, which closely mirrors the earlier Phone (2a) model with slight technical enhancements. However, the most captivating feature isn’t the phone itself, but the new "News Reporter" widget leveraging AI to deliver summarized news updates.

 

Priced at $399, the Phone (2a) Plus features a MediaTek Dimensity 7350 Pro 5G processor, providing a 10% boost in CPU power and a 30% increase in graphics performance over the previous Dimensity 7200 Pro. The front camera has also been upgraded to a 50 MP sensor capable of 4K recording at 30 fps, delivering sharper, well-exposed selfies, particularly in low light conditions. The main specifications remain the same, including a 6.7-inch AMOLED display and a 5,000 mAh battery. The highlight is the "News Reporter" widget, available by default on all Nothing and CMF phones, and accessible via the Nothing X app for both Android and iOS devices. Utilizing ElevenLabs’ technology, it features the synthesized voice of Nothing’s CFO Tim Holbrow, presenting news summaries sourced from trusted English-language outlets through the News API. These summaries are created using Meta’s Llama language models and are refreshed daily, offering one-minute segments on various topics, which can be customized by users. However, the widget lacks attribution to the original news sources, making it difficult to explore the stories further.

 

The "News Reporter" widget from Nothing highlights a growing trend of AI integration in mobile devices, alongside other major players like Samsung and Google enhancing their products with advanced AI features. While the widget offers an engaging and personalized experience, the lack of source attribution raises concerns about the depth and reliability of the news, emphasizing a critical issue in AI-driven information dissemination.
