Meta AI Conquers India: WhatsApp Drives Meta’s Technology Expansion.

Key Points.
- Exponential Growth: WhatsApp in India has over 500 million users, representing the largest market for Meta AI.
- Massive Usage: Meta AI has handled billions of queries from Indian users since its recent launch in the country.
- Cultural Challenges: Meta has had to adapt its AI algorithm to respond equitably to India’s cultural and religious diversity.
- Global Expansion: Meta AI is now available in 22 countries, with support for several languages including Hindi and Italian.

Meta recently emphasized the importance of the Indian market for its artificial intelligence ambitions. With more than 500 million active users on WhatsApp, India has become the largest market for the use of Meta AI, a technological reality that is transforming users’ interaction with Meta’s digital services.

Susan Li, Meta’s CFO, during the presentation of second quarter financial results, revealed that Meta AI adoption in India has seen unprecedented growth. "We are seeing particularly promising signs on WhatsApp in terms of retention and engagement," Li said. The introduction of Meta AI, which has only been made available to all Indian users since June, has already generated billions of queries.

Meta AI’s expansion has not been without obstacles. The company has faced various challenges in adapting its AI algorithm to the cultural specificities of India. For example, in May, Meta AI generated images of Indian men predominantly wearing turbans, and later, complaints emerged regarding the fairness of AI-generated religious jokes. Meta then made changes to ensure a more balanced and respectful response to different religious sensitivities.

Globally, Meta AI has expanded its support to several languages, including French, German, Hindi, and Italian. Now available in 22 countries, Meta AI continues to expand its reach. Recently, markets such as Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico were added.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, also anticipated the need for more computing power for the future of their AI. "The amount of processing needed to train Llama 4 will likely be almost 10 times the amount used to train Llama 3," Zuckerberg said, highlighting the company’s technological ambitions.

In addition to progress in AI, Meta has also seen positive signs for its social networks. Threads, Twitter’s rival, has reached nearly 200 million users. Facebook is also seeing increased use among young adults in the United States.

These developments indicate that Meta is investing heavily not only in improving its artificial intelligence capabilities, but also in consolidating its position as a global leader in social platforms.
