TikTok Launches "Sound Search": New Feature to Compete with YouTube Music and Shazam

Key Points :
1. Advanced Voice Search : "Sound Search" allows you to find sounds on TikTok by singing, humming or playing them.
2. Limited Availability : The feature is currently being tested for some users in selected regions.
3. Discovery of Trends: In addition to identifying songs, the tool also shows popular videos that use those sounds.
4. Variable Effectiveness: The tool is most effective with popular songs on TikTok, but may have difficulty with lesser-known songs.

TikTok has introduced a new feature called "Sound Search" that aims to improve the music search experience within the platform. The feature, currently available only to a limited number of users in certain regions, allows users to find a song by singing, humming or playing it.

This innovation positions itself as a direct competitor to YouTube Music and Shazam’s music detection tools. While Shazam is known for its ability to recognize songs only when they are played, "Sound Search" and the corresponding YouTube Music tool offer the ability to identify songs even when they are sung or hummed.

A distinctive aspect of "Sound Search" on TikTok is that, in addition to providing the title of the song, it shows popular videos using that track or its remixes. During testing, the tool proved to easily recognize popular tracks such as Rihanna’s "Umbrella" and TikTok’s well-known "oh no oh no oh no no" sound. However, it showed limitations in recognizing lesser-known or lesser-used songs on the platform, such as Hilary Duff’s "Fly."

TikTok clarified to TechCrunch that the main goal of the tool is to identify songs and not specific TikTok sounds. Nevertheless, during testing, "Sound Search" was also able to recognize famous sounds/memes such as those from the "Totally Spies" episode or created by TikTok users themselves.

For those with access to the feature, "Sound Search" is available in the app’s search bar. Just click on the microphone icon and select "Sound Search" to get started.

The introduction of "Sound Search" represents a step forward for TikTok, expanding its search capabilities and enhancing users’ interaction with music content. The platform, already widely used as a visual and sound search engine, thus aims to further consolidate its position in the social media and digital music landscape. It is not yet clear when the feature will be available to all users.
