 Cambridge,MA- MIT CSAIL researchers have presented a new methodology for training domestic robots using scans made with an iPhone. This innovative technique aims to overcome one of the biggest challenges in home automation : the management of unstructured and semi-structured environments, which vary greatly from one home to another.

Simulations for intensive training

Simulation is now a fundamental element in robot training. It allows machines to try and fail countless times without the consequences and costs associated with real-world errors. A prime example is training a robot to put a glass in the dishwasher: in simulation, it can break thousands of virtual glasses without causing any real damage.

Adaptability through iPhone scans

MIT’s new methodology uses scans taken with an iPhone to create virtual models of houses. These models are then loaded into simulations, allowing the robots to train in specific, realistic environments. This approach greatly improves the robots’ ability to adapt to different house configurations and changes in the environment, such as moving furniture or the presence of new objects.
