It was revealed by Bloomberg, which provided in-depth details on the project recently unveiled in Paris by a research lab backed by billionaire Xavier Niel. Researchers say Moshi can communicate with users by simulating as many as 70 different emotions and behaviors, even adopting a distinctive French accent.

"It reasons as it communicates," said Patrick Pérez, CEO of the research company. "We believe Moshi can radically transform the way we interact with and through machines." It is an ambitious project that aims to challenge OpenAI’s well-known ChatGPT. In fact, Moshi seems to want to compete directly with the voice assistant intended for ChatGPT Plus users, which was launched in May with emphasis on its advanced image-recognition capabilities and quick, accurate responses.

While OpenAI plans to bring its product to market in the fall, thus falling short of its initial schedule, Moshi will be available soon as an open-source technology. While described by researchers as an "experimental prototype," this French project has the potential to become a global player in AI development in Europe. The only concern raised by experts relates to security, but Chief Science Officer Hervé Jégou reassured that indexing tools and watermarks will be implemented to track AI-generated audio.
