MANGA ORANGE : AI TO TRANSLATE MANGA IN ONE-TENTH THE TIME COMPARED TO HUMANS

Japan has recently introduced a revolutionary solution to combat piracy in the "manga" industry by harnessing AI. A new star-up, called "Manga Orange," was established through a public-private sector collaboration, with the goal of tripling manga exports in the next five years.

This project involves ten companies, including Shogakukan and the Japan Industrial Innovation Investment Corporation ( JIC ), and is also supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

The creation of Manga Orange required an investment of 2.92 billion yen, and its technology will allow manga to be translated in one-tenth of the time currently required by human translators. The first manga translated through this innovation will be available in the United States as early as this summer.

The initiative aims to combat piracy, which represents a significant economic loss to the manga and anime industry, largely due to delays in translations. Piracy is estimated to take away between $2.57 billion and $5.40 billion from the publishing industry, slowing the distribution of content from Japan to the West.
