G7 IN APULIA : POPE FRANCIS ADDRESSES TOPIC ON ETHICS OF AI
This year’s G7 summit, held at the Borgo Egnazia resort in Puglia, focused on ethics in the use of AI.
This meeting follows initiatives from the previous year’s Hiroshima summit, where a voluntary code of ethics was introduced for companies and public institutions using AI.
The presence of Pope Francis gave an added dimension to the discussion, emphasizing the need for ethical guidelines for a technology that, without proper controls, could exacerbate misinformation and threaten privacy and digital identity.
The Pope has repeatedly expressed concerns about AI, such as in his message for World Peace Day on Jan. 1, in which he highlighted the importance of responsible and humane use of AI.
Since 2020, the Vatican has promoted an initiative to keep technology anthropocentric and prevent negative impacts on employment, stressing that algorithms should not coercively influence personal choices, as this would undermine freedom and the " Civilization of the Spirit."
During the G7, the Pope reiterated the need for an ethical connection for AI, stating that " no machine should ever choose whether to take the life of a human being."
He also insisted that crucial decisions must remain in human hands to ensure personal dignity and freedom.
He also stressed the need for meaningful human control over the decision-making processes of algorithms.
The Pope’s entrance to the session dedicated to AI, energy, Africa and the Mediterranean was greeted with warm applause.
Accompanied by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and French President Emmanuel Macron, the Pope urged leaders to preserve the value of human dignity, challenged by the weakness of the current ethos.
He recalled the 2020 " Rome Call for AI Ethics," stressing the importance of algoretics that inspire technological innovations to the human good.
Father Paolo Benanti, advisor to the Pope on AI, commented on the importance of addressing limited resources and policy choices related to the use of AI.
In the context of the G7, Telefono Azzurro presented a Manifesto for child-friendly AI, highlighting the need for a safe and inclusive digital ecosystem for mimors, with principles of access, safety, protection, transparency, education and collaboration.
These crucial themes underscore the mission of Pope Francis’ pontificate, which has always sought to respond to contemporary challenges, from migration to environmental issues to Artificial Intelligence.
