Apple is collaborating with OpenAI to use their GenAI while plausibly developing its own, similar to how it used Intel CPUs while developing Apple Silicon.
Apple has introduced Apple Intelligence, a personal AI system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that integrates generative models with personal context to deliver useful and relevant intelligence. This system is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, leveraging the power of Apple Silicon to understand and create language and images, perform actions across apps, and simplify everyday tasks. With Private Cloud Compute, Apple sets a new privacy standard in AI, balancing computational capacity between on-device processing and server-based models running on dedicated Apple Silicon servers. According to Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, Apple Intelligence will transform users’ experience with Apple products, combining generative AI with personal context to provide truly helpful and secure intelligence.
Apple Intelligence introduces new capabilities for understanding and creating language. Writing tools integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia allow users to rewrite, proofread, and summarize texts across various apps. In Mail, the Priority Messages feature highlights urgent emails and offers previews and smart replies. Notifications are managed to display the most important ones and reduce interruptions. Additionally, audio can be recorded, transcribed, and summarized in Notes and Phone apps.
The new Image Playground tool enables the creation of fun images in seconds, available in apps like Messages and in a dedicated app. Users can choose from styles such as animation, illustration, or sketch, and create images based on descriptions or personal photos. In Notes, Image Playground can be used with the Apple Pencil to make notes more visually engaging.
Apple also introduces Genmoji, original emojis created based on textual descriptions or photos of friends and family. Genmoji can be added to messages or shared as stickers or reactions. In Photos, search capabilities are enhanced with natural language understanding, allowing users to find specific moments in videos and remove distracting objects in photos.
Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence, offers richer and more contextually relevant language understanding, simplifying everyday tasks. Siri can now follow more natural conversations and maintain context between consecutive requests, and can be used through both text and voice. Siri also features a new design with an elegant glowing light around the screen edge when active.
Apple ensures that Apple Intelligence respects user privacy with on-device data processing. For more complex requests, Private Cloud Compute extends privacy into the cloud without storing data on servers. Independent experts can verify the code running on Apple Silicon servers to ensure privacy.
ChatGPT will be integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, allowing Siri to tap into ChatGPT’s broad knowledge when needed. Users will be informed before any questions are sent to ChatGPT, always maintaining control over their data.
