Previous studies have shown that a strong sense of future self-continuity promotes better saving behaviors, academic performance, and overall quality of life.

"Future You" enables users to chat with a relatable and realistic virtual version of their future selves, tailored to the user’s future goals and personal qualities. To make the conversation realistic, the system generates "synthetic memories," creating a continuous life story from the user’s current age (between 18 and 30) to 60 years old. Additionally, the virtual character adopts an aged version of the user’s photo, enhancing the credibility and realism of the interaction.

The study’s methodology involved several phases. Initially, users completed a questionnaire collecting demographic information, life narratives, and future goals. Then, users uploaded a photo, which was processed to show an aged version. Finally, a synthetic memory was generated based on the provided data, forming the basis for the conversation with the user’s future self.

The study involved 344 participants, divided into four conditions: interaction with "Future You," post-intervention questionnaire completion, interaction with a generic virtual assistant, and pre-intervention questionnaire completion only. The results showed that participants who interacted with "Future You" reported significant reductions in anxiety and increases in future self-continuity compared to the control groups. This indicates that the platform has the potential to improve mental well-being through a stronger connection with one’s future self.

Statistical analysis used ANOVA and post-hoc tests to assess differences between groups, showing significant effects on variables such as negative emotions, anxiety, motivation, and future self-continuity. Notably, participants in the "Future You" condition showed a reduction in negative emotions and anxiety, as well as an increase in future self-continuity.

This research represents the first attempt to use AI-generated characters as an accessible and effective intervention to improve future self-continuity. The implications of this study are broad, suggesting that such interventions could be used to promote future-oriented decision-making and improve mental health. However, ethical considerations are important, such as the potential for inaccurate future depictions that could negatively influence present behavior.

The success of "Future You" in enhancing future self-continuity and reducing anxiety opens new avenues for AI-based interventions in psychology and mental health. Future studies could further explore the potential of such interventions, enhancing the accessibility and effectiveness of AI technologies for human well-being.
