At Turtle’s AI we are fans of local models. We’ve been using Stable Diffusion since its early releases, back in 2022. Now, SD3 has been out in the cloud for some time, but it’s still not available to be used locally. Things are about to change.

June 12 is the anticipated release date for the third version of the text-to-image model, Stable Diffusion. This announcement was made at the Computex conference in Taiwan, where Stability AI’s CTO and interim co-CEO, Christian Laforte, shared the news alongside AMD CEO Lisa Su.

Laforte emphasized that "a lot of thought went into this" concerning AI safety, which is why his company feels the revised model is ready for broader testing. He described this release as a transformation in how AI models are developed, shifting from cutting-edge research to a natural evolution, allowing users to unlock new use cases.

No technical details were provided about Stable Diffusion 3 (SD3), but black and white images of a human hand hovering over the strings of an ornate acoustic guitar were shown to illustrate the advancements in this edition, comparing one created with SD XL 1.0 in 2023 and the other with SD3. Laforte praised the image created with SD3 for its more realistic details, like the shape of the guitar and hands, acknowledging some imperfections but calling it a "big change" made possible by a multimodal diffusion transformer that better understands prompts.

Additionally, images generated by SD3 were shown to be created in less time than it took to enter the prompt, attributing the model’s improved prowess to hardware with more high-bandwidth memory. Laforte mentioned the 92 gigabytes of HBM as a "game changer," expressing the need for even more memory and compute. AMD’s Lisa Su welcomed the news that SD3 will run perfectly on the new Ryzen 300 AI CPUs announced during the same keynote.

Stability AI has created a "weights list" for potential users, including a section for a Discord ID, likely reflecting Stable Diffusion’s popularity among game developers.

Highlights:

  • Stable Diffusion 3 set to release on June 12.
  • Announced at Computex by Christian Laforte and Lisa Su.
  • Model improved through multimodal diffusion transformer and advanced hardware.
  • Compatibility announced with AMD’s new Ryzen 300 AI CPUs.
