Steam Allegedly Banning Games With AI-Generated Art
DukeRem8 July 2023
#Valve, the #company behind #Steam (and #HalfLife, before that), may be banning #AI-generated games. Reddit users claim games featuring AI art have been rejected due to unclear ownership of AI-generated content.
As Steam maintains its position as the leading platform for PC gaming, new concerns are emerging that the platform may not be compatible with games developed using modern generative AI tools that are rapidly advancing. Reports suggest that Valve, the company behind Steam, could be prohibiting or has already begun prohibiting games containing AI-generated art due to intellectual property issues.
One Reddit user claims that after submitting a game featuring AI art assets to Steam, Valve rejected the game citing unclear ownership of the AI-generated art. Valve reportedly asked for confirmation that the developer owned all rights to the IP in the AI models that created the art.
Even after changing the art, the game was still rejected due to unclear rights to the AI technology used. While Valve has yet to comment, there are indications that AI-generated text in games may also be a concern.
However, not all existing AI-assisted games have been removed from Steam. If true, this would not be the first time Valve has banned certain content from Steam, having previously prohibited blockchain games with NFTs. Intellectual property issues surrounding generative AI remain complex and controversial.
