Lesson 5: Conversational AI and Chatbots
DukeRem13 June 2023
In this central and topical lesson, we'll explore one of the most popular applications of #LLMs: #conversational AIConversational #AI refers to AI systems that can engage in natural, human-like conversations. #ChatGPT, which you'll learn more about later in this series, is an example (but not the only one) of a state-of-the-art conversational AI system.   #Chatbots are a form of conversational AI that can interact with users through #text or #voice. They can answer questions, provide support, and even engage in casual conversation. LLMs are the driving force behind many modern chatbots, as they can understand and generate human-like responses.   The ability to engage in conversation makes LLM-powered chatbots valuable tools in customer servicevirtual assistants, and even mental health support. They can help you with things like answering your questions or just having a friendly chat. It's like having a buddy who's always available to help you out.   Chatbots can have memory. Many chatbots use a type of memory called "short-term memory" to keep track of the conversation they're having with a user. Short-term memory allows the chatbot to remember the context of the conversation, so it can respond appropriately to the user's messages.   For example, if you're chatting with a customer service chatbot and you've already provided your name and order number, the chatbot can use its short-term memory to remember that information and use it to provide better assistance. This can help make the conversation feel more natural and personalized.   However, it's important to note that chatbots don't have the same type of memory as humans do. They can't remember experiences or emotions as humans do. Instead, they rely on the data they've been trained upon (see previous lessons 3 and lesson 4) to remember and use that information to provide a helpful response.
