Microsoft and GitHub announced their adoption of the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard developed by Anthropic to facilitate the integration of AI models with external data sources. The announcement was made at Microsoft’s Build 2025 conference, highlighting the companies’ commitment to interoperability and security in the AI ​​ecosystem.

This approach aims to overcome fragmented integrations, providing a scalable and interoperable solution.

Microsoft announced the integration of MCP into several of its platforms, including Azure, Windows 11, and GitHub Copilot. In particular, Windows 11 will support MCP, allowing developers to expose application functionality as an MCP server, making it easier for AI models to interact with system components such as the file system and Windows Subsystem for Linux. To ensure security, Microsoft has worked with Anthropic and the MCP community to develop updated authorization specifications, introducing trusted access methods for AI applications.

In parallel, GitHub has helped create a registry service for MCP servers, enabling developers to implement centralized repositories for MCP server entries and making it easier to discover and manage MCP implementations. Additionally, Microsoft has partnered with Anthropic to develop an official C# SDK, available as a NuGet package, to make it easier to integrate MCP into applications.

The adoption of MCP by Microsoft and GitHub comes amid a broader push for the standard by other industry leaders, such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind, who have announced that they are integrating MCP into their products and SDKs.
