On May 7, 2025, at PyTorch Day France in Paris, the PyTorch Foundation announced its transformation into an umbrella foundation, a strategic step to consolidate and expand support for open source AI projects. This transformation allows the foundation to host a broader range of initiatives, spanning the entire AI lifecycle, from training to inference to industry-specific applications.

The first projects to be integrated into the new framework are vLLM and DeepSpeed. vLLM, developed by the University of California – Berkeley, is a high-performance inference engine for large language models, designed to maximize memory efficiency and hardware compatibility. DeepSpeed, contributed by Microsoft, is an optimization library for distributed training, which facilitates the scaling of AI models at scale, supporting a variety of hardware and offering advanced optimization techniques.

The decision to expand into an umbrella foundation reflects the rapid growth of the PyTorch Foundation, which in two and a half years has seen the membership of over 30 companies and 120 dynamic projects.
