Anthropic Launches Web Search API for Claude
New features allow Claude models to access up-to-date data online, improving the accuracy and usefulness of real-time responses

Anthropic has introduced a new API that enables Claude models to access up-to-date information via web searches. This capability enables developers to build more accurate and current AI applications, without the need for their own search infrastructure.

Key Points:

  • Real-time Access: Claude can now perform web searches to provide answers based on up-to-date data.
  • Integration with Claude Code: Developers can leverage web search to improve their programming.
  • Custom Control: You can define domains that Claude searches can be allowed or denied.
  • Supported Models: The feature is available for Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku.

Anthropic has announced the launch of a new API that enables its Claude AI models to perform web searches, providing access to up-to-date and relevant information. This capability enables developers to build applications based on Claude that can provide more accurate and contextual answers, leveraging real-time data, without the need to manage their own search infrastructure.

When web search is enabled, Claude uses its reasoning abilities to determine if a query benefits from up-to-date information. If so, it generates a targeted search query, retrieves relevant results, analyzes them, and provides a full answer with citations to the original sources. This process can include multiple searches, with Claude refining its queries based on previous results to improve the accuracy of its answers.

Developers can customize Claude’s search behavior by specifying the domains from which it can or cannot search. They can also enable or disable web search at the organization level, providing granular control over access to information.

The new feature is also integrated into Claude Code, Anthropic’s programming tool currently in beta. With web search enabled, Claude Code has access to up-to-date API documentation, technical articles, and other useful resources to support developers in their day-to-day work.

The service is available for the Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku models, with a cost of $10 per 1,000 searches, in addition to the standard costs for the tokens used. This initiative is part of a broader context in which AI companies are looking to enhance their models to offer increasingly effective and up-to-date solutions to their users.

With this move, Anthropic aims to provide developers with advanced tools to create AI applications that respond precisely and timely to user needs, leveraging the vast amount of information available online.
