Pinterest introduces tools to identify and restrict AI-generated content, addressing growing user concerns. The new features aim to preserve the authenticity and quality of the viewing experience on the platform.

Key points:

  • Automatic labeling of images generated or modified with AI.
  • Option to restrict the display of AI content in specific categories.
  • Ability for creators to dispute incorrect labels.
  • Continued commitment to responsible use of generative AI.

Pinterest announced the implementation of new features aimed at combating the growing presence of AI-generated content on its platform. Users will now see an “AI-modified” label in the lower left corner of images, indicating that the content was created or altered using AI tools. This identification is based on the analysis of image metadata, in accordance with the IPTC standard, and internally developed classifiers to detect AI content even in the absence of obvious markers.

In response to user complaints about the overabundance of AI-generated images, Pinterest will introduce an option to display less AI-generated content in particularly affected categories, such as art and beauty. This feature will be accessible via the three-dot menu at the bottom right of each Pin, allowing users to influence the recommendation algorithm and reduce exposure to AI-generated content.

Creators will have the ability to challenge the labeling of their content if they believe the “AI-modified” identification has been incorrectly applied. Pinterest emphasizes the importance of thoughtful use of generative AI, recognizing its inspirational potential but also the risks associated with uncontrolled implementation. The platform continues to explore additional technologies to improve the identification and management of AI content, while maintaining its goal of providing a quality, authentic experience to users.

These initiatives represent a significant step in addressing the challenges of integrating AI into online content, highlighting Pinterest’s commitment to providing transparency and control to users in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
