Zyrex, a new construction robot developed by RIC Robotics of Torrance, California, represents a significant innovation in the construction industry. The 20-foot-tall robot is designed to autonomously perform complex tasks such as welding, carpentry and 3D printing, thanks to the integration of LiDAR sensors and AI VLA (Vision-Language-Action) models. These technologies allow Zyrex to operate in dynamic work environments with human monitoring, improving efficiency and safety on construction sites.
The robot was designed to address two of the construction industry’s biggest challenges: the shortage of skilled labor and the dangers associated with high-risk jobsites. According to RIC Robotics, the United States will need to attract more than 439,000 skilled construction workers in 2025 to meet industry demand. Additionally, in 2023, the construction industry had the highest number of fatal injuries of all industries, with 1,075 deaths. Zyrex aims to mitigate these issues by offering an advanced technology solution.
A working prototype of Zyrex is expected in early 2026. The robot will initially be controlled by humans using VR and physics simulators, while collecting real-time data using LiDAR and vision sensors, comparing it to digital building information models (BIMs) to ensure accuracy and quality. Eventually, Zyrex will transition to fully autonomous operation.

Zyrex builds on the capabilities of an existing 3D construction robot, RIC-PRIMUS, while a previous model, RIC-M1 Pro, was used to 3D print two Walmart warehouse expansions in Tennessee and Alabama. The latter was completed in seven days, three weeks ahead of schedule, demonstrating the efficiency and effectiveness of RIC Robotics’ technology.
