OpenAI has introduced “Memory with Search” to ChatGPT, a feature that allows the chatbot to use information from past conversations to personalize online searches. This update aims to provide more relevant and personalized responses to the user.

Key Points:

  • Advanced Personalization: ChatGPT can now tailor responses based on details learned from previous interactions.
  • User Control: Users can manage, change, or disable the “Memory” feature at any time.
  • Limited Availability: The feature is rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, excluding certain European countries.
  • Privacy Considerations: OpenAI has implemented measures to protect sensitive user information.

OpenAI recently enhanced ChatGPT with “Memory with Search,” allowing the chatbot to use details from past conversations to refine online searches. This capability allows ChatGPT to personalize responses based on the user’s preferences and previously shared information. For example, if a user has indicated that they are vegan and live in San Francisco, a generic query like “recommended restaurants near me” will be interpreted as “vegan restaurants in San Francisco,” providing more relevant results. The “Memory” feature is currently available for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, with exclusions for some European countries due to privacy regulations. Users retain full control over this feature, being able to view, edit, or delete the information stored, as well as disable memory through the settings. OpenAI has emphasized the importance of privacy, ensuring that sensitive information, such as health data, is not stored unless explicitly requested by the user. Additionally, a “temporary chat” mode is available for conversations that do not impact the chatbot’s memory. This update is part of OpenAI’s strategy to make ChatGPT an increasingly personalized and useful virtual assistant, distinguishing it from other chatbots like Google’s Gemini or Anthropic’s Claude. In parallel, OpenAI introduced the o3 and o4-mini models, further improving ChatGPT’s reasoning and language understanding capabilities.

The “Memory with Search” feature represents a significant step towards more personalized and contextualized interactions between users and ChatGPT, while maintaining a balance between utility and privacy.
