TSMC, a world leader in semiconductor manufacturing, has officially begun accepting orders for its advanced 2-nanometer wafers, marking a major step in the technological evolution of the industry. According to industry sources, customers are ready to invest around $30,000 per wafer, highlighting the high value and expectations associated with this innovation.

Apple, a long-time partner of TSMC, is listed as the first customer to benefit from this cutting-edge technology. The Cupertino company is expected to use the 2nm chips for its upcoming A20 processor, which will be used in the iPhone 18 series, expected in the second half of 2026. This move further strengthens the collaboration between the two companies, with Apple continuing to ensure priority access to TSMC’s latest innovations.

In parallel, TSMC is making significant progress in its manufacturing facilities. The Hsinchu plant has increased monthly production from 3,000 wafers in mid-2024 to around 8,000 units now, with a goal of reaching 22,000 wafers per month by the end of 2025. The Kaohsiung plant, ahead of schedule, is ready to start production almost immediately, contributing to the overall goal of 30,000 wafers per month.

TSMC’s 2nm technology introduces the adoption of gate-all-around (GAA) transistors with vertically stacked nanosheets, allowing the gate to surround the channel on all four sides. This innovation reduces current leakage and increases drive current, improving the performance and energy efficiency of the chips produced.

In addition to Apple, other companies such as Qualcomm have also expressed interest in TSMC’s 2nm process, with plans to introduce new chipsets based on this advanced technology. This underscores the strategic importance of the 2nm node in the semiconductor landscape and the growing demand for high-performance and energy-efficient solutions.

TSMC continues to invest billions of dollars in building new foundries to support 2nm chip production, with plans to introduce even more advanced technologies, such as the 1.4nm node planned for 2027.
