OpenAI announced updates to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode, aimed at improving the voice conversation experience. These improvements include reduced interruptions during user pauses and a more natural and engaging voice personality. ChatGPT free users can now benefit from an updated version that allows for seamless pauses, while subscribers to the Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, and Pro plans are getting further improvements in the voice assistant’s personality. An OpenAI spokesperson said the new AI voice assistant for paid users is “more direct, engaging, concise, specific, and creative in its responses.”

These updates come as competition in the AI voice assistant space intensifies. Sesame AI, a startup backed by Andreessen Horowitz and founded by Oculus cofounder Brendan Iribe, has recently gained attention for its Maya and Miles voice assistants, which are known for their natural, interactive feel. Users have reported that conversing with the assistants feels surprisingly similar to interacting with a real person, thanks to natural pauses, pitch changes, and emotional responses.

Larger companies are also stepping up their efforts in the AI voice assistant space. For example, Amazon is preparing to release an updated version of Alexa based on large language models (LLM), with the goal of making interactions more natural and conversational. These developments underscore the growing importance of AI voice assistants in today’s technology landscape.

OpenAI’s updates to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode represent a significant step toward more natural and customizable voice interactions, as competition in the industry continues to drive innovation and improvement.
