Meta AI arrives in Europe: a limited launch between innovation and regulatory constraints
Isabella V20 March 2025

Meta has announced the launch of its AI-powered virtual assistant, Meta AI, in 41 European Union countries and 21 overseas territories, including Italy. However, due to strict European privacy regulations, the service will initially be limited to a smart chat feature available in six languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Italian. Meta AI will be integrated into the company’s major platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. Additionally, after a period of exclusivity in the United States, Meta AI is now available to WhatsApp users in the United Kingdom.

Key Points:

  • European Launch: Meta AI is now available in 41 European Union countries and 21 overseas territories, including Italy.
  • Limited Features: Due to privacy regulations, the assistant currently only offers a smart chat feature in six European languages.
  • Platform Integration: Meta AI is integrated into WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.
  • UK Availability: Following its launch in the US, Meta AI is now available to WhatsApp users in the UK.

Meta has finally launched its virtual assistant, Meta AI, in Europe, marking a significant step in the company’s global expansion. This launch comes after a year-long delay due to regulatory concerns raised by European authorities over user privacy and the use of user data to train AI models.

Meta AI currently offers an intelligent chat feature in six European languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Italian. This feature allows users to interact with the virtual assistant to get information, plan trips or get answers to questions using information available on the web, without drawing on European users’ personal data.

The assistant is integrated into Meta’s major platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, giving users direct access through these applications. Additionally, after initially being limited to the US, Meta AI is now also available to WhatsApp users in the UK. However, some users have expressed frustration with the assistant’s integration into the messaging app, wishing they could turn it off entirely.

Meta AI’s launch in Europe strikes a balance between technological innovation and compliance with the European Union’s strict privacy regulations. Meta has worked closely with regulators to ensure that the virtual assistant complies with European laws, avoiding the use of local users’ personal data to train AI models.

This launch marks an important step in Meta AI’s global expansion, aiming to offer advanced features to European users while still complying with local privacy regulations.
