Apple introduced the “Priority Notifications” feature with iOS 18.4, leveraging Apple Intelligence to manage alerts based on their relevance. This option allows the most important notifications to be displayed first, improving the organization of alerts on the lock screen.

Key points:

  • Advanced notification management: Apple Intelligence automatically selects the most relevant notifications.
  • Optimized display: Priority notifications are shown in a dedicated section on the lock screen.
  • Manual activation: The feature is disabled by default and must be enabled in settings.
  • Limited compatibility: Available only on devices with at least 8 GB RAM and Apple Intelligence enabled.

Apple has released the first developer beta of iOS 18.4, introducing an interesting AI-based feature: “Priority Notifications.” This new feature aims to improve alert management on iPhones by automatically selecting the most important notifications, which will be displayed in a separate section on the lock screen. Currently, iOS sorts notifications chronologically, showing the most recent ones at the top. With this new feature, the most relevant alerts will instead be placed in the foreground, even if received previously.

Apple Intelligence is behind this selection, analyzing the content of messages and determining their priority. Users will still be able to scroll up to view all notifications, thus ensuring full control over alerts received. The feature is disabled by default and can be enabled by accessing the iPhone settings, under the Notifications section, and enabling the “Prioritize Notifications” option.

Initial tests suggest that Apple Intelligence tends to prioritize notifications from messaging apps or time-sensitive events, such as upcoming deliveries, over other apps such as Gmail or Asana. Precise technical details about the criteria used by AI to rank notifications have not been disclosed, but it appears that the content and context of the message affect its relevance.

The iOS 18.4 update is currently available in developer beta and will need to go through the public beta program before official release. The Priority Notifications feature requires at least 8 GB of RAM to work and is therefore only compatible with iPhone 15 Pro and later models. In addition, Apple Intelligence must be enabled in the device’s settings to use it.

In parallel, Apple announced the arrival of Apple Intelligence on Vision Pro with visionOS 2.4, currently in developer beta, and Apple News+ Food, a new section dedicated to collecting and managing recipes from News+ publishing partners.

This new feature is part of a broader context of improving the user experience, with Apple continuing to develop AI-based solutions to optimize the management of information on its devices.
