Google is evolving its search platform, moving towards an AI-based model. By 2025, the goal is to make online search increasingly similar to an AI assistant, with advanced tools such as Project Astra, Gemini and Mariner, which could radically transform the user experience. Although early implementations have shown limitations, the company continues to invest in innovation to remain competitive.

At a recent conference, Google CEO Sundar Pichai outlined the direction the company intends to take in the coming years, with the goal of increasingly integrating AI into online search. This shift, which represents a significant evolution from the traditional link-based search engine, aims to make Google Search a sort of AI assistant that not only provides information, but actively responds to user queries, analyzing and interpreting the web in real time. Pichai emphasized that while the shift to AI in Search is already underway, 2025 will be the year in which innovation will reach its peak, with the introduction of new features that will greatly expand the scope of online search.

Google’s approach is based on several initiatives, including the highly-regarded multimodal AI system Project Astra. Astra has the ability to process video content in real time, answering specific questions based on what it “sees” through a camera or screen, representing one of the boldest explorations of AI applied to search. The long-term goal is for this type of technology to also power wearable devices, such as smart glasses with augmented reality, which Google is working on in parallel.

Additionally, Gemini, another Google advanced AI project, could improve the use of Search. This system would be able to generate detailed search reports, automating tasks that today users perform manually using Google. In other words, Google would no longer simply return a list of links, but would be able to provide complete answers, writing personalized research articles based on user requests.

Another interesting development is Project Mariner, an AI assistant that allows you to interact with websites directly from the search engine, reducing the need to navigate between pages. Google is designing tools that could, in the future, be able to perform actions on websites on behalf of the user, making traditional interaction with portals obsolete. This would represent a major change in the way consumers use the web, simplifying and accelerating access to information.

Although Google’s efforts have encountered some difficulties, particularly when the first AI overviews showed glaring errors, such as absurd and inaccurate answers, the company seems determined to continue investing in AI. The introduction of functions that allow users to ask follow-up questions, similar to a chatbot, seems to be one of the most imminent developments, as confirmed by Pichai himself. This change, which would change the very nature of online search, could lead to a significantly more interactive and personalized user experience.

As Google prepares to face increasing competition from tools like ChatGPT, which have already proven to quickly gain a large audience, the company seems ready to renew its approach to search, with the hope of maintaining its dominance in the sector.

The developments expected for 2025, in fact, could mark a new era in the evolution of search engines, where AI will not only assist users, but will become an integral part of the search process itself.
