Innovation in Medical Imaging: Andres Diaz-Pinto’s Contribution to Healthcare AI
From King’s College London to NVIDIA, the path of a pioneer in AI applied to diagnostics and surgery
Isabella V2 February 2025

Andres Diaz-Pinto, a pioneer in AI applied to medical imaging, helped develop MONAI Label, an open source platform for advanced annotation of diagnostic images. After his academic training at King’s College London, he joined NVIDIA, where he continues to innovate in the field of computer vision and machine learning applied to healthcare.

Key points:

  • Innovation in medical imaging: Diaz-Pinto developed MONAI Label, an AI system that accelerates image annotation.
  • Collaboration between research and industry: His work combines academic expertise with NVIDIA’s advanced technologies.
  • Impact on neurosurgery: The algorithms developed improve the accuracy and speed of imaging.
  • Future outlook: AI is transforming surgery with advanced simulations and supporting robotics.

Originally from Cúcuta, Colombia, Andres Diaz-Pinto has always seen education as the key to personal and professional advancement. As the first in his family to graduate from college, he vigorously pursued his studies until earning a doctorate in computer vision and deep learning. During his postdoctoral research at King’s College London, he specialized in active learning for medical imaging, working closely with experts in the field. His contribution was instrumental in the creation of MONAI Label, an innovative open source tool designed to optimize medical image annotation through AI. MONAI Label is an integral part of MONAI, the project developed in collaboration between KCL and NVIDIA to apply the most advanced AI technologies to medical imaging. After a period of cooperation with NVIDIA’s healthcare team, Diaz-Pinto was officially integrated into the company in 2022 as a Senior Deep Learning Engineer. In this role, he leads the development of advanced deep learning models in the cloud, with the goal of enhancing diagnostic capabilities through automated analysis of clinical images. Working with experts at NVIDIA, he continues to maintain close ties with academic research, collaborating with academic institutions and hospitals. His work has a significant impact on neurosurgery, contributing to the development of technologies that improve the accuracy of diagnoses and reduce analysis time for radiologists. With advances in machine learning, medical images are processed with greater accuracy, facilitating early detection of disease and reducing costs to the health care system. Parallel to her career, Diaz-Pinto values work-life balance, especially after the birth of her son. NVIDIA’s parental leave policy has allowed him to spend valuable time with his family, enriching his perspective on personal growth and continuous learning. In his spare time, he enjoys cycling and recently tackled a challenging 90-kilometer ride from London to Brighton in four hours. His enthusiasm for AI also extends to surgical robotics: he envisions a future in which AI systems will improve the dexterity of surgeons, making surgeries safer and more efficient. Currently, he is using the NVIDIA Omniverse platform to create surgical simulations with photorealistic digital twins of human organs, a significant step toward the transformation of AI-assisted surgery.

The evolution of AI in the medical field is redefining the boundaries of diagnostics and surgery, opening up increasingly advanced scenarios for future healthcare.
