Altman denies OpenAI is working on GPT-5
DukeRem15 April 2023
In a recent interview with Sam #Altman, the #CEO of #OpenAI, he shared his thoughts on an open letter that had been circulating in the #AI community. Altman expressed agreement with parts of the letter, specifically the idea that as AI capabilities increase, the safety bar must also increase. He also stressed the importance of taking the time to study the #safety of AI models and mitigate potential risks.
Altman went on to explain that OpenAI had taken more than six months to study the safety of their latest model, #GPT-4, before releasing it. He noted that the model had been well-received, with many people commenting on its safety and alignment. Altman also clarified that OpenAI was not currently training #GPT-5, as had been claimed in an earlier version of the open letter.
However, Altman criticized the letter for lacking technical nuance and ignoring other safety issues related to OpenAI's work. He emphasized the need to approach AI development with caution and increase rigor to address safety concerns, but suggested that the open letter was not the optimal way to address these issues.
Altman also discussed OpenAI's philosophy of openness and transparency, which he believes is essential in order to engage everyone in the discussion around AI and its impact on society. He acknowledged that this approach can sometimes result in mistakes and the need to change course, but believes it is worth it in order to build a better future for all.
Altman's comments reflect OpenAI's commitment to responsible AI development and their belief in the importance of engaging the wider community in this process. As AI continues to evolve and impact our lives, it is crucial that we take a thoughtful and measured approach to its development and deployment.
