Apple has decided to temporarily suspend AI-generated notification summaries for news and entertainment apps, a move prompted by the numerous criticisms it has received following the release of inaccurate content. This move was made official with the release of the latest developer previews for iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3. Among the issues raised, one of the most notable concerns a recent incident involving the BBC. An article, incorrectly reported through an automated summary, attributed an act of suicide that never occurred to the alleged murderer Luigi Mangione. Such errors drew a negative reaction from both the media and users, prompting Apple to revise its approach to this feature.

In addition to temporarily disabling summaries for the aforementioned apps, the company is introducing structural improvements for the entire feature. Among the major changes, notification summaries will now be displayed in italics, making them instantly recognizable compared to traditional notifications. In addition, it will be possible for users to disable this option directly from the lock screen, increasing the level of customization and control over the management of notifications. Added to this is an explicit warning that, when the feature is activated, will clearly inform the user that the summaries are still in the beta stage and therefore may have errors or anomalies. This warning will be accessible within the Settings app.

Although there had been speculation that a new label or badge would be introduced to identify content generated by Apple’s AI, no such additional visual element is currently planned. However, the company has reiterated its intention to make changes that will increase user awareness of the generated nature of such summaries.

Apple did not provide an exact date for the official release of iOS 18.3, merely confirming that the public beta will be available next week.
