Google NotebookLM, known for generating podcasts entirely based on AI, faced a usability issue when virtual hosts became annoyed by user interruptions. An update improved the interaction, making it more friendly and welcoming.

However, the introduction of interactive mode, which allows users to “interject” into AI-generated discussions, initially revealed an unexpected usability issue: virtual hosts seemed to react in an annoying way to interruptions. Some users reported responses like “I was getting there” or “As I was saying,” which felt unwelcoming or even hostile. Josh Woodward, vice president of Google Labs, explained that the behavior had been unintentionally baked into the system and needed to be reworked.

The NotebookLM team solved the problem by changing the design of the prompts virtual hosts used to respond to users. The developers experimented with how team members would respond to similar situations, trying to replicate a more friendly and patient tone. Despite speculation that training data might have been a factor, a source familiar with the project said the primary cause was the design of the prompts, rather than the data itself.

The update has shown promise: now, when a user stops a podcast, AI hosts respond with positively surprised expressions, such as “Woah!”, followed by a friendly invitation to join the discussion. This change has significantly improved the user experience, demonstrating how attention to detail in human-machine interactions can positively influence the perception of technology.
