Hugging Face, one of the best-known platforms for managing and developing AI tools and models, has reached a final resolution in the lawsuit filed by Korean startup FriendliAI. The dispute had stemmed from FriendliAI’s alleged infringement of a patent concerning an innovative batching technique designed to optimize query management in AI systems. According to FriendliAI, the technology enables more efficient processing by allowing new requests to be added to a partial batch and send results that have already been completed without waiting for the entire processing.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Delaware nearly two years ago, officially ended on Jan. 8 with the signing of a confidential agreement between the two companies. The document filed with the court sanctions FriendliAI’s waiver of further proceedings, specifying that the lawsuit is dismissed with prejudice, i.e., without the possibility of being re-filed. In addition, both parties have agreed not to seek legal costs or expenses from the other side. The court, however, will retain jurisdiction over any issues related to the settlement.

FriendliAI, founded in 2021 and primarily active in developing AI infrastructure solutions, had alleged that the “server” component of Text Generation Inference, a Hugging Face tool, used its patented technology without permission. The startup, which boasts funding from venture capital funds and a presence in the United States as well, had sought damages, an injunction to stop further infringement, and a license to use the technology involved.

Hugging Face, based in Brooklyn and backed by high-profile investors such as Google, Amazon, Nvidia and Salesforce, has established itself as a leading global reference for developing and hosting AI models. The platform offers a wide range of tools and services, including customized consulting for AI implementation in the enterprise environment.
