Sony has lifted the lid on its XYN standalone headset, a device that has piqued the interest of experts and enthusiasts at CES 2025. Also known as the “spatial content creation system,” the device is not designed for the gaming market, but for professional content production, particularly in the fields of 3D computer graphics, virtual reality, and animation creation. XYN uses a series of advanced technologies, including a powerful Qualcomm XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, the same one used in other devices such as those from Samsung, and a 4K micro-OLED display that promises a high-quality visual experience, characterized by sharp and immersive images. During the presentation, Don Hopper of UploadVR had the opportunity to try out a prototype of XYN, demonstrating the device in real time. The headset, in fact, integrates innovative features such as support for creators’ precise movements through a particular controller design. While a ring controller was no longer included in the demo, the use of a handheld controller to manipulate objects in VR was highlighted, with small adjustments allowing for very precise interaction with the virtual environment. While the focus is on the hardware, the product is not just limited to the headset: Sony is also launching XYN Motion Studio, a new software application that improves the way professionals capture and manipulate motion data. Available in March 2025, this platform supports the interconnection of up to 12 “mocopi” motion sensors, a system already familiar to VR users and social platforms like VTuber, designed to make motion capture more accessible and precise. What’s more, XYN Motion Studio will also offer advanced auto-tagging and automatic motion interpolation capabilities, streamlining the workflow for game, film and animation creators. In parallel, Sony is developing a spatial acquisition system that can transform real-world objects and spaces into photorealistic 3D assets using mirrorless cameras and proprietary algorithms. These technologies promise to make it easier for professionals to produce content for the metaverse, pre-visualize movies and games, and create detailed virtual environments. The prototype of this mobile application, which will display real-time shooting data from mirrorless cameras, will help further streamline the 3D production workflow, while the XYN headset itself will integrate seamlessly with existing 3D production software. Finally, XYN, while designed for a professional audience, is also attracting interest in the entertainment world, with Sony already working on collaborations with studios such as Sony Pictures Animation to test the prototype in the field of 3D modeling and animation. This system, which combines innovative software and hardware, aims to become a complete solution for the creation of immersive and high-precision content, opening up new creative possibilities for various sectors.
