AI’s Impact on News Credibility
DukeRem8 April 2023
The rapid adoption of #generative #AI #technology has raised concerns about the validity of news and sources. Recently, a journalist at #TheGuardian received an email from a researcher who came across an article apparently written by the journalist on a specific subject a few years ago. However, the article was missing on the website and in "search" section.
Despite searching the records and systems, it was discovered that the article had never existed. The source of the article was ChatGPT, the #generativeAI technology that had created the article when asked about articles on that subject.
This raises concerns about the accuracy and reliability of sources in journalism and could feed into conspiracy theories. The integration of this technology in Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 has further normalized its use. The Guardian has created a working group and small engineering team to explore the technology safely and responsibly for journalistic use.
Meanwhile, in Australia, the mayor of Hepburn Shire Council may take legal action against OpenAI, the owners of ChatGPT, for falsely claiming he was imprisoned for bribery while working for a subsidiary of Australia's national bank. OpenAI has not responded to requests for comment.
