The tool, initially available to hundreds of thousands of partner channels focused on educational and informational content, aims to make videos more accessible in different languages. With this technology, a video uploaded in English can be automatically translated and dubbed into French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish, and vice versa for videos in those languages. The process is completely automated: creators simply upload their content as usual, while YouTube takes care of analyzing and generating dubbed versions.
Dubs can be previewed and managed in the "Languages" section of YouTube Studio. Users can review, accept or delete the result if they are not satisfied. This approach gives creators complete control over the content, while viewers can select their preferred language through the audio track selector. YouTube will also remember the language preference to make future videos easier to watch.
Despite the undeniable innovation, YouTube stresses that the technology is still in its infancy. At the moment, it may not be perfectly capable of handling linguistically complex situations such as rapid speech, multi-speakers, or lip-synching. However, the service already offers good accuracy in narrative contexts and moderate dialogues, and significant improvements are planned. Among these, the integration of an advanced feature called “Expressive Speech,” previewed during the “Made on YouTube” event. The implementation is the result of a collaboration with the Aloud team, born within Google’s Area 120 incubator, which has focused its efforts on developing an innovative tool to facilitate the understanding of video content globally. Thanks to the integration with Google Translate and Google DeepMind, automatic dubbing benefits from advanced machine learning and speech synthesis technologies.
Currently, the feature is available for content ranging from education to scientific dissemination, but YouTube plans to soon extend it to other categories.
