A significant outage affected the ChatGPT services, Sora and the OpenAI API for developers. The disruptions, which began at 3 p.m. PT on Wednesday, were partially resolved at 7 p.m. PT, with full recovery completed by 9 p.m. PT. The causes are still being analyzed.

Key points:

  • Duration of outage: Services offline from 15:00 PT to 21:00 PT on Wednesday.
  • Services affected: Impacts on ChatGPT, Sora and developer API.
  • Timing of recovery: Operation restored gradually, with full recovery by the evening.
  • Cause of Disruption: Configuration issue, unrelated to parallel events such as 12 Days of OpenAI or integration with Apple Intelligence.

On Wednesday, starting at 3 p.m. PT, OpenAI services, including ChatGPT, Sora and the dedicated developer API, experienced a critical outage that caused inconvenience to users worldwide. The situation was partially resolved at 7 p.m. PT, with a return to full operations recorded around 9 p.m. PT, as confirmed by the company itself on its official status page and in a subsequent tweet. During the downtime, users attempting to access services received an error message indicating that the problem had been identified and that a fix was imminently being implemented.

According to Edwin Arbus, OpenAI developer community manager, the cause of the outage was not related to the “12 Days of OpenAI” promotional event or the recent integration with Apple Intelligence. Arbus specified that the problem stemmed from an incorrect configuration change that rendered many servers unusable. This also directly impacted the user experience of the new Sora platform, which was just launched earlier this week. Previously, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had reported higher than expected interest in Sora, which forced the company to temporarily limit registrations. Despite these measures, many new subscribers encountered difficulties using the services, reporting errors and messages of overloaded servers on launch day.

Wednesday was particularly complex for the digital landscape, as Meta’s products also suffered a global outage. Meanwhile, OpenAI continued to work on its “12 Days of OpenAI” program, which saw the introduction of new tools and updates, including the release of the o1 reasoning model, improvements to Canvas, and a new integration with Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.2. However, Wednesday’s outage raised questions about the platform’s infrastructural resilience as it faces increasing demand globally.

The rapid restoration of services demonstrates OpenAI’s commitment to ensuring business continuity, but the incident highlights the need for more robust strategies to avoid future disruptions.
