David Luan, together with Pieter Abbeel, a robotics researcher who joined Amazon after the acquisition of some technologies from Covariant, will lead a team that will try to address fundamental research challenges. Luan and Abbeel explained that the lab will focus on key areas such as learning from human feedback, the ability to correct errors autonomously and the ability to understand implicit goals to improve the execution of actions. This work is part of Amazon’s broader AGI ecosystem, overseen by Rohit Prasad, who previously headed the Alexa program.

The project’s origins are linked to the startup Adept, which had developed AI agents capable of using software tools through natural language commands, with the ambition of creating digital assistants with advanced skills.
