Amazon launches AGI SF Lab, a new research center led by Adept co-founder David Luan to develop AI agents that operate in digital and physical environments, integrating human feedback and advanced skills.

Key Points:

  • New AGI SF Lab: Amazon opens a research center in San Francisco focused on advanced AI agents.
  • Experienced leadership: The lab will be led by David Luan, co-founder of Adept, in collaboration with Pieter Abbeel, a well-known robotics researcher.
  • Agentic technologies: The focus is on creating AI that can manage complex workflows and act in real and digital contexts.
  • Synergy with Adept: The project leverages Adept technologies, integrated after a recent agreement with Amazon.

Amazon has announced the opening of a new research and development center called the AGI SF Lab, located in San Francisco, with the aim of pushing the limits of AI in the field of autonomous agents. This lab, led by David Luan, co-founder of the startup Adept recently integrated into the e-commerce giant, is intended to focus on the development of AI agents capable of performing complex actions in both the digital and physical worlds. These agents will be designed to handle tasks ranging from the use of software and web browsers to the execution of commands on programming platforms.

David Luan, together with Pieter Abbeel, a robotics researcher who joined Amazon after the acquisition of some technologies from Covariant, will lead a team that will try to address fundamental research challenges. Luan and Abbeel explained that the lab will focus on key areas such as learning from human feedback, the ability to correct errors autonomously and the ability to understand implicit goals to improve the execution of actions. This work is part of Amazon’s broader AGI ecosystem, overseen by Rohit Prasad, who previously headed the Alexa program.

The project’s origins are linked to the startup Adept, which had developed AI agents capable of using software tools through natural language commands, with the ambition of creating digital assistants with advanced skills. Following a licensing agreement between the two companies, several members of the Adept team, including Luan himself, have been integrated into Amazon. The AGI SF Lab is now looking to recruit additional experts in the fields of quantitative finance, mathematics and physics to expand its expertise.

The AI agent sector is rapidly growing and could reach a market value of $31 billion by the end of the year, according to data from Emergen Research. Many organizations are planning to adopt AI agents to increase the efficiency of their processes. Amazon, for its part, has already experimented with similar technologies through platforms such as Bedrock and Amazon Q Business, and intends to make Alexa more "proactive", capable not only of responding but also of acting autonomously.

The challenge is open, with other players in the sector such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google engaged in the development of advanced AI agents. However, acquisitions and strategic collaborations, such as the one between Amazon and Adept, clearly show how the e-commerce giant intends to play a central role in this promising technological field.

Initiatives such as the AGI SF Lab demonstrate the commitment of large technology companies to shape the future of AI, taking it beyond pure automation towards a fluid and intelligent interaction with the human and digital world.
