IMAX has decided to use AI to improve the localization of its original content in order to respond to the evolution of global media consumption, which is increasingly oriented toward productions in languages other than English. With the entertainment industry growing by 5 percent to $2.8 trillion in 2023 and forecast to grow further over the next five years, the demand for multilingual content has become a priority. Even in traditional English-speaking markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, content in other languages is gaining ground, as evidenced by the 90 percent growth in viewers of non-English content on Netflix in the United Kingdom over the past three years. IMAX has therefore chosen to ally with Camb.ai, a Dubai-based startup specializing in the use of AI models for voice translation and dubbing, to expand its offerings and bring its content to a global audience. Camb.ai, already active in the translation of live sporting events, has developed advanced technologies such as the Boli model for voice-to-text translation and Mars for its voice emulation, which allows it to recreate speech in a new language while keeping details such as background acoustics and intonation intact. Its models support 140 languages, including those less represented online, and are designed to minimize latency, with translation times ranging from 20 to 30 seconds. The collaboration between IMAX and Camb.ai includes an initial implementation phase with high-demand languages as part of a project to optimize translation costs, although without revealing specific details about expected savings. Camb.ai, founded by Akshat Prakash and his father Avneesh in 2023, has already raised $4 million in a seed funding round, with plans to further expand its business and team, which currently consists of 50 people.
IMAX said the launch of AI technology to translate its original content is still in the early stages, but the partnership represents a significant boost to the company’s globalization by making its films and documentaries accessible in more languages.
