Amazon is deploying AI to make the holiday season easier and more convenient for its customers around the world. The shopping season, which begins with Black Friday and Cyber ​​Monday, is seen by the company as a major event, a logistics “Super Bowl.” As Scot Hamilton, vice president of delivery planning and routing technology, points out, AI is at the heart of every step of the process, even if it’s invisible to customers: it’s an essential element that works behind the scenes, making the system seamless. Amazon is using the technology to improve inventory management, optimize delivery routes, and support employees in managing daily requests, helping to ensure packages arrive on time, especially on busy days like Cyber ​​Monday. Amazon’s advanced forecasting system, which uses deep learning algorithms, can analyze large volumes of data to determine which products are in high demand, forecasting demand with ever-increasing accuracy. This allows the company to optimally store and manage global shipments, coordinating millions of sellers and millions of products around the world. A key aspect of the process is Supply Chain Optimization Technology (SCOT), which optimizes the sourcing and distribution of products in real time, minimizing errors and improving the speed of logistics operations. When Amazon introduced deep learning into SCOT, forecasting accuracy improved dramatically, allowing it to expand its offerings and distribute items faster. Starting in 2020, Amazon took this a step further by integrating “transformer” technology, the same technology that revolutionized natural language processing, to create a unified forecasting model that improves the accuracy of determining which items will be requested by customers.

In the context of robotics, Amazon has implemented a fleet of industrial mobile robots that play a key role in the order fulfillment process. Every time a customer makes a purchase, one of the approximately 750,000 robots is activated to retrieve the item from the warehouse, optimizing the flow of goods and reducing waiting times. These robots, equipped with artificial vision, are able to identify, select and check the quality of products autonomously. In addition, thanks to the use of generative AI, simulated scenarios are created to train the robots to manage complex situations during periods of high demand, such as those that occur during Black Friday and Cyber ​​Monday. These tools help improve the efficiency of warehouse operations, facilitating the management of an increasing number of orders.

In the package sorting phase, another robot called "Robin" plays a decisive role. Robin, which uses an advanced artificial vision system, is able to identify, separate and select packages of different sizes, calculating the best strategy to lift and move them. This complex sortation process, involving hundreds of thousands of packages every day, is being streamlined by AI, allowing Amazon to handle a massive volume of orders, which during the holiday season can exceed 100,000 packages per day at some delivery stations.

Once packages are ready to be shipped, predictive models come into play to optimize the management of the courier fleet, using more than 20 machine learning models to plan and optimize delivery routes. AI helps make real-time decisions, such as adapting to changes in weather, traffic, and changes in delivery times. With AI, delivery operations become more agile and precise, and the company is able to meet requests even in unexpected situations. Additionally, Amazon is exploring the use of advanced language models and generative AI to simplify communications with drivers, improving understanding of delivery addresses, especially for large and complex buildings.

Amazon is therefore demonstrating how AI, through practical applications in various sectors, can transform the way in which millions of packages are managed and delivered every day, especially during the Christmas period.
