Google plans to launch the Astra project, an innovative initiative to develop Ai MultiDodale agents, only in 2025. The Sundar Pichai CEO confirmed that the technology is still being developed, with promising demonstrations but significant challenges to face.
Key points:
- Google’s Astra project aims to create apps and agents for a multimodal understanding.
- The launch of technology is foreseen no earlier than 2025, contrary to more optimistic forecasts.
- During the I/O 2024 conference, prototypes were shown that interact with the surrounding environment.
- Competition in the generative AI sector is fierce, with companies such as Anthropic who face significant challenges.
Google has announced that his Astra project, an ambitious program aimed at developing AI capable agents of understanding and interacting with the surrounding world in real time, will not be launched before 2025. This information was shared by the Sundar Pichai CEO during the conference on the financial results of the third quarter of the company. Pichai described the Astra project as an anticipation of the future of AI, underlining how Google is working to create experiences in which AI not only observes, but reasons on the information it receives from the environment. The project was introduced to the I/O developer conference in May 2024, where Google presented different innovative technologies, included apps for smartphones capable of recognizing objects and answering contextual questions, as well as virtual assistants capable of performing specific tasks for the ’user. During a pre -aggravated demonstration, a prototype was shown to answer questions about elements framed by the camera, for example regarding the position of a user or the name of a component of a damaged bicycle. However, despite the promises, the launch of an experience focused on the consumer was initially scheduled for December, but now it seems unlikely, unless it is an initiative distinct from the Astra project. In a similar context, Anthropic has recently obtained notoriety as one of the first companies to have developed a model of generative capable of controlling applications and browsers on computers, demonstrating complexity and challenges in creating agents of effectiveness. Despite the progress, Anthropic is facing difficulties with basic activities, highlighting how difficult it can be to develop technologies of actually operational and useful.
The road to the launch of the Astra project is still long and full of technical and practical challenges, but represents a significant step in the direction of a future in which AI becomes an active partner in the daily life of users.
