The Indian government is collaborating with Nvidia to develop chips dedicated to AI, aiming to strengthen the semiconductor industry in the country. The talks, still in the preliminary phase, could lead to significant innovations in the AI sector.

Key points:

  • Negotiations between the Indian government and Nvidia for the development of chips.
  • India aims to expand its manufacturing manufacturing industry.
  • Projects in progress for the construction of a supercomputer equipped with 10,000 GPUs.
  • Focus on specific applications for local needs, such as rail security.

The Indian government is currently engaged in discussions with Nvidia for the joint creation of chips intended for AI, as confirmed by the Minister for Electronics and Computer Science, Ashwini Vaishnaw. The negotiations, currently in the preliminary phase, place India in a position of growing relevance in the semiconductors’ design sector, aspect that the country is trying to develop further. With the start of a "Mission Ai", Nuova Delhi has put at the center of his priorities the development of an advanced infrastructure for AI, which includes ambitious plans for the creation of a supercomputer capable of managing 10,000 GPUs. This project is accompanied by initiatives that provide for funding for companies that want to offer GPUs for rent, thus facilitating access also to smaller suppliers, traditionally excluded from large investments. Recent changes to the regulations therefore favor a more inclusive entrepreneurial context. In this scenario, the interviews between Nvidia and the Indian government took into consideration chips designed to meet specific local needs, including the safety of the large Indian railway networks. Currently, Nvidia already offers advanced solutions in the field of video analysis and Smart City, many of which are based on its Edge platform called Orin. Several companies, such as Hitachi, have already implemented Nvidia hardware in real -time railway analysis projects, highlighting the interest and applying possibilities in the Indian context. However, the local production of high-tech chips, such as those based on ARM Cortex-A78AE processors, is still far from full realization, considering the limits of existing infrastructure in India. This context suggests that a collaboration in the design of chips could represent the most probable result of current negotiations. The attention to the potential of this alliance could intensify in the next few days, especially in view of an informal intervention of the CEO of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, scheduled in an event in Mumbai.

This initiative could therefore reveal further details on the strategic directions of the collaboration between India and Nvidia in the field of AI
