A controversial legal case has begun in Massachusetts, where a student’s parents are suing the school over a punishment they received after using AI in a project. The matter raises questions about school policies regarding the use of such technologies.

Key points:

  • A student was punished for using AI in a social studies project.
  • Parents call for removal of the punishment and an affirmative vote.
  • The school defends its policies against unauthorized use of AI.
  • The case could reach court by the end of the month.

In Massachusetts, a legal case is drawing attention after the parents of a student, identified as RNH, decided to sue the school over punishment given to the boy for using AI in a social studies project. RNH reportedly told teachers that he used AI only to support his research and not to write the entire paper. However, the punishment, which occurred on a Saturday, also resulted in the loss of an important National Honor Society membership opportunity, prompting the parents to take legal action to defend their son’s academic future. In the documents filed with the court, they point out that the boy risks irreparable harm, which could affect his prospects for admission to prestigious institutions of higher education, with looming deadlines starting Oct. 1, 2024. The family is therefore seeking an injunction to correct their son’s academic records, demanding the removal of any reference to the incident, a grade of B for the disputed project, and the removal of any indication of cheating. On the other hand, the school filed a motion to dismiss the case, arguing that RNH and his classmates had been adequately informed regarding the guidelines on the use of AI, contained in the student handbook distributed the previous fall. According to school policy, the use of AI tools is prohibited for exams, papers and assignments unless explicitly authorized. The school claimed that RNH used ideas from another source without citing them in his notes or project, thus violating the rules and acting unfairly to fellow students who complied with the regulations. If no agreement is reached between the parties involved, the dispute will be settled in court by the end of the month.

The issue raises significant questions about the use of AI in education and its ethical implications.
