Black Forest Labs, the startup that recently gained notoriety through the support of Andreessen Horowitz, has unveiled a beta API that allows developers to integrate its image generation models, known as Flux, into their applications. This API offers a choice of different Flux templates, with added features such as content monitoring and restrictions on image resolution, thus providing some security for users. Also launched in parallel is the new Flux1.1 Pro model, which promises significantly improved performance, with up to six times the generation speed of its predecessor, Flux1 Pro. The new model is capable of producing images with a maximum resolution of 2k (2048 × 1080), an ability that will also soon be implemented in the API, with the aim of improving the quality of the generated images and ensuring greater diversity in the final result.

Flux1.1 Pro is also accessible through various Black Forest Labs partners, including Together AI, Replicate, Fal.AI, and Freepik. Costs for using the API start at 2.5 credits per image, while for 100 credits the price is $1. The Flux1.1 Pro model requires 4 credits per image, making the platform competitive in terms of affordability. Based in Germany and with a recent funding round of $31 million, Black Forest Labs was co-founded by a team of engineers who had previously worked on Stability AI technology. However, the startup is at the center of controversy regarding a deal with xAI to integrate Flux technology into the Grok assistant, an arrangement that led to the generation of controversial images. Although Black Forest Labs has not revealed details about the data used to train Flux, the images created through xAI indicate a possible inclusion of copyrighted works in the training set, which could lead to legal issues if rights holders decide to take legal action.

In addition to its API, Black Forest Labs is developing models for video generation and is rumored to be looking to raise $100 million at a valuation of $1 billion, a significant increase from its previous valuation of $150 million. The API is central to the business, as training and running models involves significant costs, and investors are usually looking to see a return on investment. However, the startup will face growing and established competition in the media generation industry, with competitors such as Ideogram, Pika, Luma, Runway, Stability and Midjourney, as well as giants such as OpenAI and Google.
