Meta Connect 2024 saw the debut of the Meta Quest 3S VR/MR, which will be available from October 15. This headset, equipped with the powerful Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, offers a virtual and mixed reality experience at a competitive price, although it has some differences compared to the Meta Quest 3.
Key points:
- Launching October 15, 2024, priced at $299 for 128GB and $399 for 256GB.
- Same performance as the Meta Quest 3, but with differences in display, lens, and field of view.
- Longer battery life and compatibility with most existing Quest accessories.
- Meta Quest 3 will see a price reduction, while Quest 2 and Quest Pro will be discontinued.
The Meta Quest 3S was the centerpiece of the Meta Connect 2024, set to launch on October 15, priced at $299 for the 128GB version and $399 for the 256GB version. While it shares the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset as the Meta Quest 3, there are some significant differences between the two models. The Meta Quest 3S comes with less storage than its predecessor (which has 512GB), a slightly narrower field of view of 89 to 96 degrees, compared to the Quest 3’s 110 degrees, and a slightly thicker Fresnel lens, seen in the Quest 2, rather than the Quest 3’s more advanced pancake lens. Another thing that sets the Quest 3S apart is its single LCD display, which is a big difference from the Quest 3’s dual LCD display. It also lacks a headphone jack, a feature found on the higher-end model. However, the Quest 3S does have the edge in battery life, averaging 2.5 hours, slightly longer than the Meta Quest 3’s 2.2 hours. The Quest 3S retains compatibility with most existing accessories, such as Elite Straps and carrying cases, but requires a new Compact Charging Dock, as it is not compatible with the previous Charging Dock. It’s worth noting that the Meta Quest 3 will be getting a price cut, dropping from $649 to $499, as Meta will discontinue sales of the Quest 2 and Quest Pro models. All Meta Quest 3 purchases made by April 30, 2025, will include a free copy of Batman: Arkham Shadow, a prequel game in development by Camouflaj that launches on October 22, as well as a three-month subscription to Meta Quest+, which offers access to a variety of VR games. Other major VR titles were unveiled at Meta Connect 2024, including “Metro: Awakening,” available November 7 for PS VR2, Meta Quest 3, and Steam VR, and “BEHEMOTH,” a new fantasy action-adventure game from the creators of “The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners,” coming December 5.
Meta is once again redefining the VR/MR experience, offering consumers a balance of price, performance, and innovation.
