The integration of Google DeepMind’s AI video model, Veo, into YouTube Shorts promises to improve the quality of the videos generated, allowing creators to produce six-second clips and high-quality backgrounds. Other new features include audience engagement tools and advanced AI for content creators.

Key Points:

  • Integrating the Veo AI model into YouTube Shorts.
  • New interaction tools like "Jewels" and digital gifts.
  • Automatic voice-over expanded to new languages with expressive speech.
  • New AI tools for content creation in YouTube Studio.

YouTube, during the Made On YouTube event, presented several new features regarding the integration of AI on the platform. The undisputed star was the introduction of Google DeepMind’s AI video generation model, known as Veo, within YouTube Shorts. Veo, initially presented at the Google I/O 2024 conference as a reference model in the video generation sector, stands out for its ability to produce high-quality clips, up to 1080p, in various cinematic styles. This puts it in direct competition with other similar solutions such as OpenAI’s Sora, as well as other innovative video generation technologies such as Pika, Runway and Irreverent Labs. Its integration into Shorts represents a major step forward from the Dream Screen feature, introduced in 2023 to generate backgrounds through text prompts. Thanks to Veo, creators will be able to not only improve the visual quality of backgrounds but also generate independent six-second video clips. This capability opens up new storytelling possibilities, allowing you to add connecting or transitional scenes, such as a city skyline shot, to add context to a video. Dream Screen will process four images for you to choose from to create your video, making the creative process easier.

One of the most exciting aspects is the ability for creators to edit and remix previously generated clips, amplifying the flexibility of the production process. All content created through Veo will also be marked with a watermark using DeepMind’s SynthID technology, to identify it as AI-generated. Alongside these innovations, YouTube has announced a series of updates designed to improve the interaction between creators and viewers. Among these are “Jewels” and digital gifts, similar to TikTok’s “Gifts,” which will allow users to send digital objects during live streams, increasing the ways in which they can actively participate. This feature will initially be implemented in the United States for vertical live streams. YouTube has also expanded its automatic dubbing feature, which now supports languages such as French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. A new “expressive speech” technology is currently being tested, allowing the creator’s tone, intonation and ambient sounds to be preserved in the dubbing process, ensuring a smoother and more natural experience. The company has also expanded the availability of community hubs, giving creators and their followers more ways to engage through posts and replies, helping to build a more active community.

Finally, the “hyping” feature, already tested in markets like Brazil, Turkey, and Taiwan, will soon be available in more countries. This feature allows viewers to express their support for their favorite creators, with the most popular videos appearing on a special leaderboard. Another significant development for creators is the introduction of AI tools directly within YouTube Studio. Users will be able to use AI to brainstorm video ideas, create automated thumbnails, and respond to followers with AI-assisted comments, improving the efficiency and quality of engagement.

YouTube is demonstrating an ongoing commitment to innovation, leveraging AI to expand creative possibilities and improve the interaction between creators and viewers.
