NVIDIA Ready for Changing of the Guard: RTX 4090s Nearing End of Production
With the discontinuation of current flagship graphics cards, the next-generation RTX 5090 is set to redefine industry performance

NVIDIA is preparing to discontinue RTX 4090 and 4090D GPUs in October, ahead of the launch of the RTX 5090 and 5090D. This move could lead to supply shortages and price increases, signaling a new phase in the GPU market.

Key Points:

  • NVIDIA will discontinue the GeForce RTX 4090 and 4090D GPUs starting in October.
  • A shortage of these GPUs is expected in November, ahead of the launch of the new RTX 5090 and 5090D.
  • The new RTX 50-series cards will offer significant performance improvements thanks to GDDR7 memory and the Blackwell architecture.
  • Enthusiasts should consider purchasing the current GPUs before the price increases due to the shortage.

NVIDIA is preparing to discontinue its flagship GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D graphics cards starting in October, with a supply shortage expected in November ahead of the launch of its next-generation RTX 5090 and 5090D GPUs. The RTX 4090, which launched in October 2022, has been the undisputed king of GPUs for nearly two years, with no direct competition to challenge its dominance in the high-end gaming segment. However, it looks like NVIDIA is planning to transition to its new “Blackwell” series, which features significant performance improvements and the use of GDDR7 memory, which promises to increase bandwidth and power efficiency. The new RTX 5090 and 5090D could be up to 48% faster than the 4090, with a TDP of around 600W, signaling an evolution in both compute power and architecture.

Leaks from Chinese channels confirm that production of the current RTX 4090 and 4090D will be reduced, while retailers will face a reduction in inventory. This shortage of supply could lead to higher prices, as demand remains high despite the high costs of these GPUs. The Chinese version, the RTX 4090D, will also be affected by this phase-out process. Buyers may have to act quickly if they want to secure one of the last RTX 4090 units, before inventory runs out completely.

The RTX 5090 is expected to be heralded as the new gold standard, with radical improvements in the enthusiast GPU sector. In addition to significantly higher performance, it will feature a new architecture and innovative technological solutions, destined to further push the capabilities of computation and graphics rendering.

The discontinuation of the RTX 4090 and 4090D marks the beginning of a new phase in the high-end GPU market, with the long-awaited arrival of the RTX 5090 and 5090D promising to redefine the standards of the industry once again.
