AMD FSR 4 will be the next evolution of graphics upscaling technology, based on AI for the first time. This step brings AMD closer to the AI-driven solutions already offered by Nvidia DLSS and Intel XeSS, improving visual fidelity and optimizing performance, especially on portable devices.

AMD is about to make a significant breakthrough in its upscaling technology, announcing that the next generation of FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR 4) will make extensive use of AI. This represents a radical change from previous versions, FSR 2 and FSR 3, which relied on purely analytical approaches to improve resolution and image quality. By adopting AI, AMD aims to close the gap with Nvidia, which has integrated AI into its DLSS system since 2018, and Intel, which uses XeSS technology. The new architecture promises to increase visual fidelity, improving the quality of generated images, and bring in details that were not possible before.

One of the main applications of this technology will be frame generation and interpolation, which will play a crucial role in optimizing performance in portable devices. In fact, AMD has emphasized that the main goal is to extend battery life, which is critical for devices such as ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, which currently offer poor gaming battery life. With FSR 4, the hope is to make longer gaming sessions possible without compromising graphics quality while maintaining acceptable frame rates.

Another important development concerns hardware support. It is expected that FSR 4 will be integrated into the next-generation RDNA 4 GPUs, expected in 2024, aiming first at the mainstream segment and then moving toward unifying the RDNA and CDNA families under the UDNA series. However, it remains to be clarified whether this new technology will be compatible only with the latest GPUs or whether it can also be used with earlier hardware, such as the RX 6000 and 7000 series GPUs.

An interesting note concerns the link with the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology used in the new SoC developed by AMD for the PlayStation 5 Pro. Both technologies share an AI base, but with platform-specific optimizations.

 FSR 4 represents a natural evolution for AMD, which aims to leverage AI to offer gamers unprecedented visual quality while reducing power consumption and improving efficiency across a wide range of devices.
