In Venezuela, a country where press freedom is increasingly under attack, an innovative technological solution is emerging to protect the safety of journalists: AI-generated news anchors. At a time when the government is intensifying repression against media and protesters, the choice to create avatars like “El Pana” and “La Chama” is a pragmatic and courageous response to continue informing the population. “Operation Retweet,” a project launched by the Colombian organization Connectas and directed by Carlos Huertas, gave birth to these virtual presenters, realistic in appearance and movements, with the aim of conveying news from independent Venezuelan sources. The idea stems from the need to protect journalists still active in the field, who are increasingly exposed to real risks. In fact, at least 10 journalists have been arrested since mid-June, according to Reporters Without Borders, while eight others are detained on charges ranging from terrorism to other serious charges. The combination of technology and journalism, as Huertas explains, becomes a way to circumvent government repression while avoiding exposing journalists to further threats of arrest or violence. The initiative comes amid mounting political tensions, where both the incumbent president, Nicolas Maduro, and the opposition are claiming victory in the recent July 28 elections. A lack of transparency in vote counting and accusations of fraud have fueled protests, often violent, that have resulted in dozens of deaths and thousands of arrests. The government, for its part, has responded with a harsh crackdown, dubbed Operation Knock Knock, aimed at stifling dissent. As tensions continue to rise, the role of independent media is becoming increasingly crucial in providing balanced and truthful information. In a country where access to truth is increasingly limited, AI offers an escape route from oppression, allowing the flow of news to be kept alive without compromising the security of those who produce it.
