Google has recently announced a significant update to its AI-powered writing tools within Gmail, specifically aimed at supporting users in reviewing and optimizing their drafts. These new features, available to those who subscribe to Google One AI Premium or have added the Gemini package to Google Workspace, include a range of options that go beyond simple automatic text drafting. Now, with the introduction of new commands, users can access functions such as “Polish,” “Formalize,” “Elaborate,” and “Shorten,” which allow emails to be refined quickly and intuitively.
These tools, easily accessible on both Android and iOS devices, are designed to appear directly in the body of the email, making the possibility of improving texts immediately visible. When opening a blank draft, a "Help me write" button appears, allowing Gemini to generate text. Once the draft contains at least 12 words, whether written manually or by the AI, a new “Refine my draft” command appears in gray letters below the inserted text. By swiping across the text, one can access the refinement options or choose to have Gemini completely rewrite the text. If the "Refine my draft" command is not visible, the same result can be achieved by tapping the pencil icon.
These advanced tools provide essential support for professionals who require effective and well-structured communication, reducing the time needed to draft quality emails. In business contexts, where precision and formality are crucial, the ability to formalize and polish texts with a single gesture is a significant advantage. The “Elaborate” function allows for adding details and expanding the information in the draft, while “Shorten” helps to condense the content, making the email more concise and direct. This set of tools reflects a growing trend in the use of AI to optimize everyday processes, simplifying operations that often require time and attention, and opening new prospects for efficiency in digital communication.
The implementation of these tools marks an important step for Google in its strategy to integrate AI into commonly used applications, offering users not only advanced features but also a simplified user experience. The new options represent a significant improvement over previous versions, where Google’s AI had already demonstrated its ability to generate accurate drafts but lacked tools for subsequent text optimization. This update thus responds to the needs of an increasingly wide audience of professional users seeking technological solutions to improve the quality of their communications.
