In the medical field, continuous monitoring of vital signs is a crucial challenge for early disease diagnosis. From this need arises the idea of Roeland Decorte, a young Belgian expert in ancient cryptography, who decided to use his knowledge to decode the secret rhythms of the heart. His passion for cryptography, combined with the awareness of the importance of timely diagnosis, led him to found Decorte Future Industries and develop a smartphone app capable of accurately detecting signs of heart disease and more using just a microphone.

Decorte, who grew up in a nursing home in Belgium, witnessed from a young age the devastating effects of undiagnosed diseases. His personal experience, when his father nearly lost his life due to an undetected heart problem, left a deep mark on his life and future choices. After years of study and a promising academic career, Decorte decided to dedicate himself to creating technology that could help avoid similar tragedies. The result of this dedication is an app that uses a microphone to collect audio data and advanced AI algorithms to analyze heart rhythms and detect possible anomalies.

Decorte’s initial idea was to develop a sensor that could be integrated into clothing, allowing constant monitoring of vital signs without the need for frequent medical visits. However, the project proved impractical due to background noise and interference. He later collaborated with Erika Bondareva, a PhD student working on a system to diagnose Covid-19 through audio data analysis. Together, they adapted this technology for the diagnosis of heart conditions, concluding that the only necessary hardware was a simple microphone.

The technology developed by Decorte uses sophisticated algorithms to eliminate background noise and focus the analysis on the body’s faint signals. This solution has been tested in India with promising results: the data collected via the app was compared with electrocardiograms (ECGs), showing 99.6% accuracy. This represents a significant step toward accessible and accurate heart diagnosis, which can be performed comfortably at home. Decorte does not stop here: his goal is to expand the use of the technology to detect other medical conditions, such as stomach cancer and blood sugar levels, through simple audio recordings.

This new frontier of diagnostics is based on well-established technologies such as pattern recognition, a skill honed by Decorte in his past as a cryptographer. The main challenge remains collecting high-quality data in home environments, but the results obtained so far are promising and could radically change the way diseases are diagnosed and treated in the future.

The connection between cryptography and medical diagnostics highlights an interesting parallel: both fields rely on the ability to recognize and interpret complex patterns. The use of AI in this context represents a turning point, with potential applications that go far beyond medicine, embracing other aspects of everyday life as well.
